At the end of the year, usually around Christmas, the vineyard is pruned. Soon afterwards, shoots start springing. During the season, the shoots are sprayed five or six times using the 'integrado' method, which means spraying is done mechanically and biologically, with chemical means only used as a fallback option. In the first weeks of september the grapes are harvested. They are made into wine following the classical local 'Bica Aberta' (=open press) method, earning the wine the Ribatejo mark of quality. The wine from the Colquico vineyard will soon appear with its own label. The best known local wines are: Bridão (white or red), Fernão Pires (white) and Castelão (red). These wines are all produced by the local cooperation Adega. Some private wineproducers try to conquer their corner of the market with wines baring exclusice names like Quinta da Falcão, Quinta da Laranjeira, Quinta da Amoreira and Joanicas, the last of which offers very good value for money. |
